Shikotsu-Toya National Park
Shikotsu-Toya National Park is near the city of Sapporo in the southwestern corner of Hokkaido-Japan's northernmost main island. It encompasses two large caldera lakes, Lake Shikotsu and Lake Toya. The volcanic actions of Mount Yotei, Mount Tarumae and Mount Usuzan-all still active to varying degrees-have shaped the surrounding landscape.
Shikotsu-Toya National Park is an ideal place to experience the rugged splendor of Hokkaido. The park is home to active volcanoes, crystal-clear caldera lakes and many species of flora and fauna, including Ezo foxes, black woodpeckers and alpine hares. The area is well known for its natural hot springs, where heated waters with soothing and healing qualities bubble to the surface. You can take a relaxing bath at various onsen resorts.
