National Park (Daisetsuzan National Park/Shikotsu-Toya National Park/Hidakasanmyaku-Erimo-Tokachi National Park)

[Daisetsuzan National Park]
Daisetsuzan National Park sits in the heart of Hokkaido, Japan's second-largest main island. The park
has thick forests, sprawling marshlands, mountainous terrain and an alpine belt. A wide range of
animals adapted to different environments live here. The Daisetsuzan area has more than 16 peaks
over 2,000 meters high, and is often called "the roof of Hokkaido." Hokkaido's two longest waterways,
the Ishikari River and Tokachi River, originate within the park. The park includes both long and short
courses to suit all levels of hiking experience (although heavy snowfalls close the trails during the
winter months). The park also boasts numerous hot-spring resorts. The Daisetsuzan area has a long
winter and a very short summer-roughly July to August. The autumn foliage reaches its colorful peak
in mid-September, heralding the first winter snows in October. Consider a late August or early
September visit if you want to see the park at its stunning, colorful best.

[Shikotsu-Toya National Park]
Shikotsu-Toya National Park is near the city of Sapporo in the southwestern corner of Hokkaido- Japan's northernmost main island. It encompasses two large caldera lakes, Lake Shikotsu and Lake
Toya. The volcanic actions of Mount Yotei, Mount Tarumae and Mount Usuzan-all still active to varying
degrees-have shaped the surrounding landscape.
Shikotsu-Toya National Park is an ideal place to experience the rugged splendor of Hokkaido. The park
is home to active volcanoes, crystal-clear caldera lakes and many species of flora and fauna, including
Ezo foxes, black woodpeckers and alpine hares. The area is well known for its natural hot springs,
where heated waters with soothing and healing qualities bubble to the surface. You can take a relaxing bath at various onsen resorts.

[Hidakasanmyaku-Erimo-Tokachi National Park]
Hidakasanmyaku-Erimo-Tokachi National Park, centered on the Hidaka Mountains, which stretch 140 km from north to south, is located in the south-central part of Hokkaido. It is the largest national park in Japan. The park is home to the highest peak in the Hidaka Mountains, Mt. Poroshiri (2,052 m), and a series of mountains over 1,900 m high, making it Japan's most pristine natural environment. The coastal area also features marine terraces, sea cliffs, and reefs. The coastal scenery includes Cape Erimo,
a distinctive feature in the park's southern end. Moreover, from the vast Tokachi Plain, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of majestic mountain scenery.
