Tourism EXPO Japan 2026
SAKAI(FUKUI)
Sakai City, home to Tojinbo, is a central hub for tourism in Fukui Prefecture. Its location makes it convenient to visit a variety of nearby attractions, including Maruoka Castle, Eiheiji Temple, Awara Onsen, and the Dinosaur Museum. With tourist facilities constantly undergoing renovations, you can discover new charms each time you visit.
Tojinbo is one of Fukui Prefecture's most iconic landmarks and a premier scenic tourist destination in Japan. A shopping street lined with stores offering fresh seafood and local specialties leads up to the cliffs, allowing visitors to enjoy strolling while snacking or trying grilled seafood right by the shore. Also worth noting is the upcoming visitor center (scheduled for completion in 2027), which will feature an observation deck offering spectacular views even on rainy days.
Mikuni Minato is a historic town that flourished through trade from the Edo period into the Meiji era. With its historic buildings still standing today, visitors can enjoy a charming, old-fashioned townscape. The area is also gaining popularity as a destination for leisurely strolls, featuring a wide array of lovely cafes, restaurants, and shops selling unique goods.
There are only twelve castles in Japan with original keeps that have survived since the Edo period or earlier. Maruoka Castle is the only one remaining in the Hokuriku region and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. In the spring of 2025, a new facility called "Machiyori Market" will open, offering visitors even more ways to enjoy the castle. In addition to a café and a shop featuring local products, the facility includes a gallery where visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the castle's history through exhibits such as historical materials and VR displays.
The Takeda district of Sakai City is an area that strongly retains the authentic atmosphere of a traditional Japanese *satoyama* (a landscape where human settlements coexist with nature in the foothills). Blessed with lush forests and clear streams—and designated in part as a forest area for health and recreation—the region offers a variety of sightseeing opportunities and activities that allow visitors to enjoy the natural *satoyama* environment. It is also attracting attention as an outdoor destination where both adults and children can have fun together.
Sakai City has been selected as a "Gourmet City" in the Gourmet City Award 2025 (organized by the Gourmet City Research Association)—marking the first time a municipality in the prefecture has received this honor. Located along the Sea of Japan, Sakai City in Fukui Prefecture is a treasure trove of fine food. It is renowned for its abundant natural beauty and traditional local ingredients, including seafood delicacies like Echizen crab, sweet shrimp, and *momi-wakame* (dried seaweed flakes), as well as specialties such as Maruoka heirloom buckwheat noodles and Takeda deep-fried tofu. Dishes showcasing these ingredients are beloved by locals and highly popular among tourists.
