Tourism EXPO Japan 2026

FUKUI PREFECTURE

Located near the center of Japan on the Sea of Japan coast of Honshu, Fukui Prefecture is a destination packed with attractions. From breathtaking natural scenery and centuries of history to delicious local cuisine and the ancient wonder of dinosaurs, Fukui offers something for everyone.

This time, our theme is "Discover Fukui's Hidden Treasures." Inspired by geological layers and excavation sites, our booth may even surprise you with life-sized dinosaurs bursting into view! Throughout the booth, you'll find a variety of interactive exhibits designed to help you uncover the many charms of Fukui.

Come and discover your own hidden treasures in Fukui!

Easy Access to Fukui

Getting to Fukui has never been easier. Since the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension in March 2024, the fastest journey from Tokyo takes just 2 hours and 49 minutes. Fukui is also conveniently accessible from the Kansai and Chukyo regions in approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Fukui—Japan's Dinosaur Kingdom

Fukui is famous as Japan's leading dinosaur destination. The prefecture has yielded the largest number of dinosaur fossils in the country, including fossils of six newly discovered dinosaur species.

One of the world's three great dinosaur museums, the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, reopened in 2023 following a major renovation. Visitors can admire 50 full dinosaur skeletons, including Japan's first publicly displayed dinosaur mummy fossil. The museum also features immersive life-sized dinosaur films projected on three giant screens, as well as hands-on fossil research programs, offering an unforgettable dinosaur experience.

At Fukui Station, giant dinosaur monuments and dinosaur-themed trick art welcome visitors, proudly showcasing Fukui as the "Dinosaur Kingdom."

A Taste of Fukui—Local Flavors You Can't Miss

No trip to Fukui is complete without enjoying its outstanding local cuisine. Seasonal specialties such as Echizen crab, along with beloved local dishes like Echizen soba and Sauce Katsudon (a pork cutlet rice bowl topped with savory sauce), are among the region's culinary highlights.

One specialty we'd especially like to introduce is abura-age (deep-fried tofu). While fried tofu is often considered a supporting ingredient in dishes like miso soup elsewhere in Japan, in Fukui it takes center stage. Exceptionally thick—almost like edible geological layers—it is crispy on the outside, soft and juicy on the inside. The local favorite is to enjoy it simply with grated daikon radish and soy sauce, allowing its rich flavor and texture to shine.
