IHEYA SMILE – Immersive Island Life Program on IHEYA
Enjoy the island life on Iheya Island, Okinawa's northernmost inhabited island in the East China Sea.
The bright blue sea, white sandy beaches, lush green mountain ranges, fields at the foot of the island, and villages where people live close together. Here, the original Japanese landscape remains.
As a stopover connecting the islands of the Ryukyu Islands, Iheya has been visited by many travelers since ancient times, and has nurtured excellent traditions and a spirit of hospitality.
We propose a stay unique to the remote islands that satisfies your spirit of peace and richness based on the nature, culture, and hospitality of Iheya.
IHEYA SMILE offers seven programs.
#Traditional Oikomi-ryo Fishing Experience
Oikomi fishing is a traditional fishing method that has been handed down since ancient times. The fishermen skillfully utilize the topography of the coral reefs and the habits of the fish to catch fish by catching them in gill nets set at the exit of the coral reef valley using rational and simple tactics. The catch is enjoyed as sashimi or grilled.
#Sabani Touring
Sabani, a traditional Ryukyuan wooden fishing boat, was once used throughout Okinawa as a means of transportation for fishermen and traveled as far as Southeast Asia. The boat is paddled with oars like a canoe or sailed like a sailboat, combining the beautiful blue ocean of Iheya with the wind and the boat.
#Snorkeling Ryugu Walkway Guided Tour with Electric Assistance
This guided tour starts from the beach and takes you on a 1.2 km round-the-beach walkway full of beautiful coral and fish with the help of an underwater scooter. Enjoy the underwater scenery at 17 points, which is as beautiful as the Dragon's Palace, including giant table corals, isobana corals, beach corals, clownfish living in anemones, and debassa sparrows swarming around branch corals, as well as Iheya's sea, which is one of the clearest in the world.
#Guided Cycling Island Tour with Electric Assistance (North/South Course)
Electric bicycles will take you to historic sites and scenic spots on the island. This tour allows visitors to enjoy with all five senses the charms of the remote islands, such as the scenery, birdsong, the scent of the sea, and the leisurely flow of time, which are often overlooked by cars.
#Kuba hat making experience using natural materials from the island
You will experience making kuba hats from kuba leaves and bamboo, which grow wild in Iheya, and which the islanders have always worn when farming and fishing since ancient times. Wearing the kuba hat you made yourself, you will feel like an islander as you participate in the fishing experience.
#Making Key Chain with Shells and Coral Scraps, Wave Art Experience
You can make key chains with resin or wave art with shells and coral scraps found on the seashore under the guidance of an accessory craftsman.
#Experience island life (overnight stay) at Mankuya
Stay at the only sashimi restaurant on the island, Uehara Suisan, and experience life on a remote island.
You will enjoy a homey stay as if you were invited to a relative's house in your hometown, where you can taste freshly caught seafood and talk with the owner, a tuna fisherman.
