Tourism EXPO Japan 2025 Aichi/Central Japan

Wakayama City
Located at the southernmost tip of the Kansai region, Wakayama is blessed with a mild climate and surrounded by beautiful mountains and the sea. The city of Wakayama serves as the gateway to this area, offering excellent access—just about 40 minutes from Kansai International Airport and around an hour from Osaka.
Wakayama City is steeped in history, with its name appearing in ancient chronicles such as the Nihon Shoki and the Kojiki. Historical landmarks and scenic spots that evoke the poetic spirit of the Manyoshu are scattered throughout the city. At the heart of it all stands Wakayama Castle, once the residence of one of the three Tokugawa families, preserving the atmosphere of a castle town from centuries past.
Designated as a Japan Heritage site, the "Wakanoura: Treasury of Scenic Beauty" area is known as a sacred place for waka poetry. For over 1,300 years, this stunning coastal landscape has enchanted visitors with its seasonal beauty and rich cultural heritage.
To the northwest lies the fishing village of Kada, home to Awashima Shrine, famous for the annual "Hina Nagashi" doll-floating ritual. Nearby, the uninhabited island of Tomogashima, with its historic gun battery ruins, offers otherworldly scenery reminiscent of an anime—making it a popular spot for hiking and camping.
No trip to Wakayama is complete without trying the local specialty: Wakayama Ramen. With its rich and savory pork-soy sauce broth, it's a flavor that keeps people coming back for more.
For those looking to unwind in a resort atmosphere, Wakayama Marina City is a must-visit. Enjoy an ocean-view resort hotel, the European-themed amusement park Porto Europa, the Kuroshio Market with its exciting tuna cutting shows, and the relaxing Kishu Kuroshio Hot Springs—all in one destination.
A city where history, culture, nature, and cuisine come together in perfect harmony—
We warmly invite you to discover the many charms of Wakayama City.
