Improved Access to Fukui
Access to Fukui has significantly improved. The Hokuriku Shinkansen, which opened in March 2024, now connects Tokyo to Fukui in as little as 2 hours and 51 minutes.
From Nagoya, it takes approximately 2 and a half hours by JR train. By car, it's also about 2 and a half hours via the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway and Hokuriku Expressway, making access excellent. In 2023, a new road connecting Gifu Prefecture and Fukui opened. Future plans also include the extension of the Chubu Jukan Expressway within the prefecture, which will make accessing Fukui even more convenient. You can easily visit for a day trip or a short weekend getaway.

When You Think of Fukui, Think Dinosaurs!
Fukui Prefecture boasts the highest number of dinosaur fossil discoveries in Japan, with six new species of dinosaur fossils having been found here. The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, one of the world's three great dinosaur museums, reopened after renovations in 2023. It now features 50 full-body dinosaur skeletons and the first real mummified fossil to be displayed in Japan. The museum has been reborn as a facility where you can truly experience dinosaurs, with life-sized dinosaur view on three large screens and fossil research experience classes.
At Fukui Station, dinosaur trick art and giant dinosaur monuments have appeared, symbolizing "Fukui, the Dinosaur Kingdom."

The True Joy of Travel is "Food"! Fukui's Proud and Exquisite Cuisine
Delicious food is an absolute must on any trip to Fukui. Classic dishes include "Echizen Gani" (snow crab), a winter delicacy, as well as "Echizen Soba" (buckwheat noodles) and "Sauce Katsu don" (pork cutlet bowl with sauce).
One of the dishes we'll highlight this time is "Aburaage" (deep-fried tofu). In Japan, aburaage is often considered a supporting ingredient, like in miso soup, but in Fukui Prefecture, it's a main dish! It's astonishingly thick, crispy on the outside, and incredibly fluffy and juicy on the inside. The local way to enjoy it is simply with grated daikon radish and soy sauce.
The second dish is "Oboro Kombu" (thinly shaved kelp). In Japan, "Tororo Kombu," which is machine-shaved, is more commonly eaten. However, "Oboro Kombu" is a delicate food that artisans shave by hand. When you eat it, you'll experience a rich aroma of the sea spreading in your mouth and a melt-in-your-mouth texture. It's recommended for use in onigiri (rice balls) or soups, but it's also delicious on its own.

Oboro Kombu is made by craftsmen who manually scrape off the surface of kombu kelp, one layer at a time. The finest of them all are extremely thin layers of just 0.01 mm, scraped off with expert skill. This is the secret to creating the texture that melts in your mouth the moment you put it in, and the rich umami that kombu originally has.
In today's world where machines are often used for cutting, the traditional hand-cutting technique is still carefully passed down in Fukui. See up close the truly miraculous techniques that can only be achieved by artisans with years of experience and refined senses, and experience the freshly cut, fluffy "world of 0.01 mm."
*Samples are available in limited quantities.
