Saiku: The Palace of Saio - the Imperial Princess Prays

Meiwa Town in Mie Prefecture is located just before Ise City, home to Ise Jingu Shrine. The town has deep historical ties with Ise.

In ancient times, this area was home to Saiku, the residence of the Saio — an imperial princess who served Ise Jingu on behalf of the Emperor. During the Edo period, the Ise Kaido Road, which runs through Meiwa, flourished with pilgrims traveling to Ise.

Along the Ise Kaido Road, visitors can find historic and cultural spots such as Take Shrine, known for its beautiful flower-filled chozuya water basins. In Meiwa Town, you can experience the history and culture of the Ise-Shima region through activities such as cycling tours and Heian-period costume experiences.

When visiting Ise Jingu, we invite you to stop by Meiwa Town as well.
