Awa – The Home of “Ai”: Searching for the Supreme Blue of Japanese indigo
The Yoshino River basin in Tokushima Prefecture is a region that built tremendous wealth during the Edo period through the production of 'Awa indigo.' Historical buildings and remnants of river ports from that era still remain today. You can visit grand farmer residences surrounded by high stone walls and white-walled buildings, walk through the streets of Wakimachi lined with luxurious 'udatsu' (decorative roof fins), or go to hilltops that offer a panoramic view of the Yoshino River, where boats carrying indigo balls once traveled. There are also places where you can experience traditional indigo dyeing firsthand, and you can enjoy Awa's food culture nurtured by the Yoshino River, like 'Awa wasanbon sugar,' 'Tokushima ramen,' and 'Gosho tarai udon' (a 100-year food). It's a chance to experience the history of Awa indigo and the local food culture all at once.
