Tourism EXPO Japan 2025 Aichi/Central Japan

Handa City

Handa City, located in Aichi Prefecture, boasts a variety of tourist attractions that highlight its rich history, culture, and natural beauty. Key highlights include the Handa Dashi Festival, the Handa Canal, the hometown of author Nankichi Niimi, and the Handa Red Brick Building.

Held once every five years, the Handa Dashi Festival is one of Japan's most dynamic float festivals, attracting visitors from across the country. In the most recent event, over 550,000 people attended over two days, with 31 elaborately decorated floats from 10 districts parading through the city. Many travel agencies organize group tours for this major event, reflecting its high popularity.

The Handa Canal area is lined with historic storehouses reflected in the water, offering a scenic and walkable experience. Within a 5-minute walk, visitors will find facilities that showcase the city's brewing and fermentation heritage, as well as large bus parking, making it ideal for both guided and free-time visits.

The Niimi Nankichi Memorial Museum, dedicated to the beloved author of Gon, the Little Fox, is a popular destination for school excursions. The museum features Niimi's handwritten diaries and literary works, surrounded by a spacious lawn area. It also offers guided tour options and has facilities for bus parking, making group visits smooth and accessible.

The Handa Red Brick Building, originally constructed as the Kabuto Beer brewery, is a large-scale brick structure from the Meiji era. Designated both as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property and a Modern Industrial Heritage Site, it also retains bullet marks from wartime air raids, providing an educational perspective on Japan's modern history. Inside, visitors can view historical exhibits and enjoy a revived version of Kabuto Beer. A parking lot for large buses is available on-site.

With flexible facilities and diverse themes, Handa City is well-equipped to accommodate a wide range of travel needs—from educational trips and cultural experiences to heritage walks. The city's deep-rooted fermentation and brewing culture is gaining increasing attention, especially around the Handa Canal, offering story-rich tourism experiences for modern travelers.
