Mt. Asama Magma Stone Park has an unforgettable scenery that feels like it's from another planet. Located in the Asama Highlands, this vast landscape was created by the catastrophic eruption of Mt. Asama in 1783, when rivers of molten lava flowed across the mountainside, forever transforming the terrain. More than two centuries later, the jagged sea of black volcanic rock remains frozen in time, offering visitors a powerful reminder of nature's immense force. Towering lava formations stretch across the horizon in every direction, creating an almost surreal landscape. Yet no matter where you stand, the Kannondo Hall of the Kaneiji Temple branch appears in view, providing a striking contrast between the harsh volcanic environment and the presence of Japanese spirituality. Built in 1958, the hall commemorates those who lost their lives during the eruption and enshrines the Sacred Kannon Bodhisattva as a guardian against misfortune. During spring and early summer, alpine flowers bloom between the rocks, while colorful rhododendrons brighten the landscape. Hidden within the crevices, vibrant mosses add unexpected splashes of green, demonstrating nature's ability to reclaim even the harshest environments. From the observation areas, visitors can enjoy sweeping views across Tsumagoi Village and as far as the Northern Alps.
