An Industrial Highway for Horse-Drawn Wagons (Hyogo Pref.)
The Japan Heritage route known as "Gin no Basha-michi & Kōseki no Michi" (Silver Carriage Road and Ore Road) traces two historically significant paths in Hyōgo Prefecture, each playing a vital role in Japan's industrial development during the Meiji era.
The Silver Carriage Road (Gin no Basha-michi) runs from Himeji to Ikuno, connecting the coastal port of Shikama with the inland Ikuno Silver Mine. This route was used to transport people, goods, and silver ore via horse-drawn carriages, symbolizing Japan's early modernization and industrial logistics.
From Ikuno, the Ore Road (Kōseki no Michi) continues deeper into the mountains, linking the mining towns of Mikobata, Akenobe, and Nakaze. These areas were once bustling centers of ore extraction and processing, and today they preserve unique remnants of mining heritage, including historic facilities and townscapes.
The route spans six municipalities—Himeji City, Fukusaki Town, Ichikawa Town, Kamikawa Town, Asago City, and Yabu City—each offering distinct cultural and historical experiences. Along the way, travelers can visit world-renowned sites such as Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Takeda Castle Ruins, often called the "Castle in the Sky" for its breathtaking mountaintop views.
This heritage corridor invites visitors to explore Japan's industrial legacy while enjoying the natural beauty and cultural richness of the region.
