Tourism EXPO Japan 2025 Aichi/Central Japan

Unzen-Amakusa National Park

Unzen City is located at the gateway to the Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. Home to the majestic Mt. Fugen and the dramatic geothermal landscapes of Unzen Jigoku ("Unzen Hell"), the area is part of the Unzen-Amakusa National Park—Japan's first designated national park.
This region is a renowned hot spring resort featuring two distinct onsen areas: Unzen Onsen and Obama Onsen, each with unique water qualities and therapeutic effects. Together, they offer a diverse and rejuvenating onsen experience for visitors year-round.
Unzen is also one of Nagasaki's leading agricultural hubs. Its abundant food supply is enriched by fresh seafood from the Ariake Sea and Tachibana Bay, as well as locally grown produce nurtured by the region's fertile volcanic soil.
One of Unzen's most fascinating geographical features is the dramatic elevation change within a compact radius—Obama Onsen and Unzen Onsen lie just 5 kilometers apart, yet span from sea level to mountain terrain. Visitors can travel from coastal hot springs to alpine onsen in just 20 minutes by car, making it a rare destination where both seaside and mountainous retreats are easily accessible.
