Usui Pass was considered the most difficult point in railway construction during the Meiji period. On September 30, 1997, the Nagano Shinkansen opened, marking the end of the 104-year history of the Shin-Etsu Main Line, which connects Yokokawa (Gunma Prefecture) and Karuizawa (Nagano Prefecture). The ``Usui Pass Abandoned Railway Walk'' allows you to experience those memories by walking. The distance from Yokokawa to Karuizawa is about 11 kilometers, with a difference in elevation of about 550 meters. The journey takes about 6 hours, passing through 18 tunnels, including lunch time for the famous Toge no Kama Meshi. We will guide you through an experience that can only be had here, where you can hear the sound of a train whistle in the distance as you walk on the rails.
