Usui Pass was considered the most difficult point in railway construction during the Meiji period. On September 30, 1997, the Nagano Shinkansen opened, marking the end of the 104-year history of the Shin-Etsu Main Line, which connects Yokokawa (Gunma Prefecture) and Karuizawa (Nagano Prefecture). The ``Usui Pass Abandoned Railway Walk'' allows you to experience those memories by walking. The distance from Yokokawa to Karuizawa is about 11 kilometers, with a difference in elevation of about 550 meters. The journey takes about 6 hours, passing through 18 tunnels, including lunch time for the famous Toge no Kama Meshi.
