The Republic of Latvia, a small country in Europe located in the centre of the Baltic States, has around two million people living in an area approximately 77% the size of Hokkaido. What is striking when standing in Latvia is the amount of greenery. About half of the country is covered by forests and dotted with rivers and lakes, which are rich in nature and home to rare flora and fauna. The highest peak is only 312 m above sea level, so if you climb a little higher you can feel the beauty of the land stretching out endlessly. Like Japan, the country has four seasons: spring with its dazzling green buds, summer with its colourful blooming flowers, autumn with its golden autumn leaves, and winter with its silvery white nights of monochrome contrasts. In this country overflowing with nature, there are people who know how to enjoy life in accordance with the changing seasons and who have carefully inherited traditional culture.
