Gifu Prefecture

Gifu is home to many world heritage sites and cultural activities. The first was the Gassho-style Village of Shirakawa-go, registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. Following that, Washi, Craftsmanship of Japanese Hand-made Paper (Hon-Minoshi) and the Yama, Hoko and Yatai Float Festivals (Takayama Festival, Furukawa Festival, and Ogaki Festival) were registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Finally, in 2015, Ayu of the Nagara River System was registered as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System, also known as a living heritage.
Each of these cultural aspects that ware recognized by the world are precious treasures to the people of Gifu, and have been passed down for generations as core elements to the Gifu lifestyle.
