Tourism EXPO Japan 2026

Railway Town Omiya / East Japan Railway Company

Railway Town Omiya

Omiya Station opened on March 16, 1885. Since then, the city has grown alongside numerous railway facilities, including railway workshops, locomotive depots, and freight yards, earning Omiya the nickname "Railway Town Omiya."

Over the years, the development of Shinkansen and conventional rail networks, together with urban redevelopment around the station, has transformed Omiya into the largest commercial and transportation hub in Saitama Prefecture.

To share Omiya's unique railway heritage and attract more visitors, JR East launched the "Railway Town Omiya" regional revitalization project. In 2023, commemorating the 150th anniversary of Japan's first railways, March 16—the opening day of Omiya Station—was officially designated as "Omiya Railway Day." Since then, annual events and community programs have been held to celebrate the city's deep connection with railways.

Together with local communities and partners, Railway Town Omiya continues to promote the area's rich railway culture, history, and attractions, creating memorable experiences for visitors from Japan and around the world.

Note: Some organization names were updated following JR East's organizational restructuring in July 2026.
