Tourism EXPO JAPAN 2024

Nagara River Basin Tourism Promotion Council

The Nagara River is one of the three clearest rivers in Japan.

The clear and beautiful Nagara River has been a part of the lives of the people living in its basin since ancient times, flowing gently and sometimes wildly, bringing great blessings to the region.
The 166-km-long Nagara River, which originates in Gujo City and flows through Mino, Seki, and Gifu Cities to Ise Bay, is the only river in Honshu without a dam on its main channel, and has maintained its remarkable beauty while accompanying the lives of many people living in its basin.
Blessed with abundant nature, the Nagara River basin is home to an unparalleled diversity of river culture.
Mino City is home to the Honmino washi paper, recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage site; Gujo City is famous for its Gujo Odori dance and Kansui-no-Kake Odori dance, also recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage site; Seki City is one of the world's three major production centers of cutlery; and Gifu City is home to the hospitality of Nobunaga, also a Japan Heritage site. And then there are the ceremonial offices of the Imperial Household Agency and the cormorant fishing on the Ose and Nagara Rivers with its nine cormorant masters.
The culture and history that the people of this basin have preserved and handed down for more than 1,000 years still live on today.
The rich ecosystem symbolized by the ayu (sweetfish) that live in the clear waters and the activities of the people who live there have been recognized as a World Heritage Site of Agriculture and one of the 100 most sustainable tourist destinations in the world. The Nagara River Basin is now attracting attention as a region that truly embodies "sustainable human activities in harmony with nature," a concept that is currently attracting attention around the world.

Why don't you come and experience the extraordinary things hidden in the daily lives of the people of the basin and find what is truly important to you?
