Tourism EXPO Japan 2023 OSAKA/KANSAI

Kumano Hongu Tourism Association

Next year 2024, our town Hongu will celebrate the 20th anniversary of designating "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range" as a World Heritage.

Hongu is located deep in the mountains at the center of Kii Peninsula, a little inconvenient place to visit, so we haven't dreamed that so many people have come here from inside and outside Japan in 20 years.

Kumano Kodo had been ancient pilgrimage routes from the former capital of Japan, Kyoto to this district Kumano. Walking Kumano Kodo was regarded to be a religious training, so many of them go on tough sections. Among them, the main route "Nakahechi" is easier to walk especially in Hongu. Walking Nakahechi in Hongu with "Kataribe" walking guide must be a fantastic experience.

Three grand shrines in Kumano district are the headquarters of all shrines named "Kumano Jinja" in Japan. They are Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha (in Shingu), and Kumano Nachi Taisha (in Nachi Katsuura). As a set, they are called "Kumano Sanzan". Please visit Kumano Sanzan, and experience the atmosphere of each.

In Hongu, there are three onsen sites. They are Yunomine, Kawayu, and Wataze. Yunomine Onsen is said to be one of the oldest onsen in Japan. It is also known as a hot-spring cure site. Kawayu Onsen is very unique that onsen water comes out from the river bed. In winter, an open-air bath named "Sennin-buro" is made on the river shore. Wataze Onsen is an onsen resort in the mountains surrounded by flourishing nature. The biggest open-air bath in western Japan, a camp ground, and cottages are popular.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Hongu soon.
